The Unselfish Kampong Spirit in Kampong Glam

Dear Friends,

It has been one year since I started serving you as your MP and Advisor to Kampong Glam’s grassroots organizations. I am pleased to share a good report with you.

Thanks to the excellent teamwork amongst residents, grassroots leaders and government agencies, these are our significant achievements in the last 12 months:

No. of Town Council Renovation Projects - 8
No. of Scholarships and Bursaries given out - 384
No. of Elderly Residents helped through Public Assistance - 262
No. of Needy Residents helped through Other Programmes - 814   
No. of Active Volunteers through Grassroots Organisations  - 379    
2007 Excellence Award Won - Kg Glam Civil Defence Executive Committee
2006 Merit Awards Won - 1. Beach Road RC 2. Kelantan RC

Numbers however are not enough. It is the unselfish kampong spirit in Kampong Glam that we need to develop even further to ensure that those who need support in our community are not left behind.

I was touched by my recent work chairing the Lift Upgrading Project team at Crawford. For several months, many grassroots leaders have worked closely with HDB and Jalan Besar Town Council to ensure that we have the best deal for our residents. They even went with me on door to door visits to explain the program to the residents affected.

The result?

More than 91% of residents turned up to vote and almost 90% voted ‘Yes’!

Our elderly and disabled who badly need the lifts will get what they need now!

Don’t live a life that only centers around you and your family! Come and join us in community activities and make Kampong Glam a home and workplace you’ll be proud of.
