31 October 2010: Kampong Glam Emergency Preparedness Day.

The Kampong Glam Community Emergency and Engagement Committee (C2E) organised the annual Emergency Preparedness (EP) Day event on 31 October 2010 (Sunday). The purpose of EP Day is to seek to impress upon the residents of Kampong Glam on the importance of building our community skills in coping with emergencies and the knowledge of first aid and life saving skills.

This year’s EP Day saw about 800 residents from our constituency descending on Kampong Glam Community Centre in anticipation for a day of fun-fill day, gaining more knowledge about first aid, life saving and emergency preparedness. The event was graced by our Advisor and Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar, Ms Denise Phua.

In her address, Ms Phua encouraged the residents to sign up as CERT Team member and first aid course in an effort to fulfil the vision of having two qualified first aiders per block of flats. The programme of the day include a talk on CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) by St John Ambulance Brigade, display by our various partners, like Singapore Civil Defence Force, Singapore Police Force, Ministry of Community, Youth and Sports, Land Transport Authority and National Environment Agency.

During the display, residents were shown demonstrations and even practised CPR on the mannequin by the courtesy of the St John Ambulance Brigade. The residents also viewed exhibits by the various partners in learning more about emergency preparedness, crime prevention, road and environmental safety, as well as importance of racial and religious harmony.

At the end of this fun filled event, the residents walked away with the serious message that we must stay vigilance at all times and also to take care of our neighbours in times of emergency. For Community Emergency Preparedness is about getting residents prepared so that the local community will know how to respond effectively to an emergency.

In response to our MP’s encouragement, 27 residents signed up as CERT member and expressed interest in the first aid and CPR courses, as well as the Community Emergency Preparedness Programme (CEPP).
