27 July 2008: Official Opening of Albert Centre Temporary Market

MP for Jalan Besar GRC and Advisor to Kampong Glam GROs, Ms Denise Phua and Special Guest, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, Dr Lee Boon Yang officiated at the Opening Ceremony at 9.30am.

The event was a funfare with the guests visiting all the stalls. Residents and visitors present were also entertained by a morning of songs and other performances.

Members from the Civil Defence were present to impart knowledge and information on fire hazards and its prevention, and the right use of the fire extinguishers.

The temporary market is able to accommodate all 172 existing stall holders. While the venue is slightly further from the residents, it is closer to the Bugis MRT and the main roads. It also comes complete with additional car parks.

The old Albert Centre wet market and food centre will be renovated at the cost of S$4.7 million and is expected to be ready by December 2009.
