21 Feb 2010: Kg Glam Lunar New Year Gathering cum Reappointment Ceremony.

Some 500 grassroots leaders attended the annual Kampong Glam Grassroots Lunar New Year Gathering cum Reappointment Ceremony. It was jointly organized by the WEC of Hong Lim-Green CC and Kampong Glam CC.

The event began with the rousing reception by the Kampong Glam Lion Dance Troupe on the arrival of the G-O-H, Advisor to Kampong Glam GROs, Ms Denise Phua.  In her opening address, Ms Denise Phua announced that the year of the golden tiger would be better and brighter than 2009 but with challenges. She shared that productivity, both at the national and personal (more babies!) levels, is a key concern facing Singapore’s future. To our grassroots leaders, Ms Phua reminded all appointees to take their community leadership role seriously. Her ABC-advice to us was (1) to Arise above our own personal concerns and think of those of the community and country; (2) to help Bond with the residents through ground activities such as floor parties and health clubs; and (3) to Connect with other organizations to Care for those who need a leg up in our constituency. This was followed by the re-appointment ceremony of the Citizen Consultative Committee, 2 Youth Executive Committees; the Indian Activities Executive Committees and the Malay Activities Executive Committee.

After the formalities, the guests partied and bonded. They were treated to a sumptuous buffet including the tossing of the ‘yi shan’ for great health and good wealth.  They were entertained by our very own talents, from a changing-face performance by Mr. Ong Beng Chiang, the 60-year old lion dance troupe instructor who learnt the art for the past 3 months, to songs by members of the WEC accompanied by the Kampong Glam WEC Mandarin Live Band.  Guests participated enthusiastically in games and dances.  Special thanks to the splendid emceeing by youth leaders, Marc Lim and Evelyn Yap!

What better way to end the event except with the photo-takings of the various GROs, posing both officially and sportingly.  It was indeed a roaring success to roaring great year ahead!
