A specialised health screening programme was held on 21.02.09 for residents from Kampong Glam. It was made possible by the kind sponsorship of several supportive partners. Asian Medical Foundation (AMF) financed logistic expenses and X-ray costs for residents who are younger than 55 as well as provided volunteers for blood pressure measurement. Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) gave a free and comprehensive battery of eye screening tests by their team of eye specialists and nurses. Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association’s (SATA) mobile X-ray unit conducted free chest X-rays for residents who are 55 and above. Last but not least, grassroots leaders from our Citizens’ Consultative Committee, Community Club (CC) Management Committee, Residents’ Committees and the Women Executive Committee (WEC) turned up in full force to guide and help the residents.
Not only did our residents benefit greatly from the various health screenings, they were given additional data on their health conditions. Each was offered a follow-up plan by the SNEC counsellors. Participants with abnormal X-ray results were notified later by SATA through their courier service. Those with high blood pressure were referred to the polyclinics for further management.
A BIG Thanks to all who came forth to serve and support:
- The organising committee led by Ms Jane Toh, Chairperson of Kampong Glam WEC and Ms Mary Law;
- Dr Chia Kiat Swan who helped us linked with the SNEC and SATA teams;
- AMF for having chosen Kampong Glam as their beneficiary;
- All grassroots leaders and volunteers who selflessly gave their time and help during the event.
