15-16 March 2010: STAR Camp -"I am a Special, Teachable, Action and Resilient student..."

Kampong Glam Community Club played to host 16 primary school students at our inaugural Star Camp. The Star Camp sought to motivate disadvantaged students who needed a special boost in their studies and self-confidence. Through a unique formula, specially created by popular trainer and camp commandant, Mr Glenn Lim, these students participated in fun-filled activities that aimed to help them soar higher.
Volunteers from Kampong Glam CC, including 7 students from Hwa Chong Institution and 6 members from the Boys' Brigade, took on the role of student mentors, acting as the big brothers and sisters of the students.
Games, such as 'Acid River', 'No man is an Island', 'Dog & Bone' etc. were played among the different groups and used as tools for learning and reflecting. Coupled with mini lectures, students learnt that nobody is a rotten apple, and that they were special, teachable, action and resilient.
The camp culminated in a talent showcase on the evening of the second day, which the Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC, Ms Denise Phua, and many grassroots leaders joined in. Students performed various items, including songs, dances and even skits. Not only was the showcase a good platform for the students to display their talents, it also showed their increase in self-confidence and bonded the team. Public affirmation was carried out and students were also encouraged to express their appreciation for someone important in their lives.
Overall, the camp was a success, thanks to the organizing committee and all participants. May the participants soar to greater heights!
