MP Denise Phua shared on the origin and purpose of Racial Harmony Day. On 21 July 1967, riots took place in various parts of Singapore. There was loss of lives and the survival of the new nation of Singapore was at stake. Since then, July of each year is reserved to remind Singaporean the importance of living in harmony, as One People, One Nation, One Singapore.
Inter-racial and inter-religious harmony is paramount for the future of Singapore. The half-day celebration included an exhibitions on the riots in 1967 and showcased games like congkat, pick-up sticks, capteh, five stones and kacang putih wrapper roli.
