The inaugural Kampong Glam Community Life Arts Programme, or CLAP!, was held on the 4th of June 2010 at the bustling Albert Mall area. Ms Denise Phua, Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC and adviser to the Kampong Glam grassroots organisations, initiated the launch of CLAP! by sounding a gong which was meant to symbolise the thriving arts scene in Singapore.
CLAP!, an initiative by the Central Singapore CDC, seeks to enliven the Central Singapore District by bringing arts to the heartlands and promoting the message of “Arts for all”. Kampong Glam has since joined the CLAP bandwagon in order to make Art accessible to residents in the constituency.
The inceptive CLAP! event showcased two different kinds of art forms, namely, the energetic Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira and Xinyao, a style of music which is popular among Singaporeans.
The night started off with an exhilarating performance by Zambiacongo, a Capoeira group that was founded in 1988. The audience was captivated by the various martial art-like stunts and was thrilled when the performers introduced some basic Capoeira moves to them. The Xinyao performance that proceeded thereafter was also greatly enjoyed by the members of the public, who clapped and sang along to famous tunes performed by a group of talented musicians from Hark Music.
Despite a technical glitch towards the end of the performance, the mood of the audience was not dampened. Even though the programme had to be shorten ed, the event was a success, with many residents enjoying themselves immensely.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Central Singapore CDC as well as the grassroots leaders and residents of Kampong Glam for their support and attendance. We hope to see all of you at our next CLAP! event on the 10th of September at Albert Mall. Do join us then for another fantastic night of Arts and Culture!
