01 Feb 2009: Kg Glam Lunar New Year Gathering cum Reappointment Ceremony.

On 1 February 2009, some 300 Kampong Glam constituency members gathered to celebrate the festive Lunar New Year. Everyone was in high spirit, exchanging greetings of goodwill. Familiar and joyful cheers welcomed the Guest-of-Honour, Ms. Denise Phua as she delivers her opening speech, despite being ill.

In her speech, Ms. Phua encouraged us to stay positive despite the worrying financial crisis. Our optimism is vital in re-building the economy, making it more vibrant and competitive. She shared that Government has done its part in unveiling a dynamic Resilience Package for both corporations and individuals. It is a time for all of us to stand as one and work hand in hand to shape a better future for Singapore. In addition, Ms. Phua thanked the re-appointed GRC leaders for their earnest contributions in serving the constituency. She stressed that being a community leader is a significant matter. Everyone of us should serve for the right reasons - to make life better for the people and reach out to those in need. She shared that being a grassroot leader is not just about attending functions and house visits with the MP or organising outings. We need to really know our residents and members so that each of our team missions can be achieved.

The conviction of the grassroots leaders was evident as they were re-appointed by Ms Phua as leaders of the constituency. Following the speech, everyone was immersed in a joyous spirit of ‘lau yu sheng’. While everyone was treated to a sumptuous spread of food, the performances on stage were entertaining and well-received. The event concluded with a meaningful photo-taking session which signified the unity of this big family.
